Michael Theodore Gallagher, 62, Hennepin County Sheriff's Office

HENNEPIN COUNTY, Minn. –  A Minnesota man is accused of killing his mother over a bedbug infestation.

Michael Gallagher, 62,  allegedly suffocated his 89-year-old mother with a garbage bag after beating her with a sculpture and choking her – all because their home was infested with bedbugs, NBC News reports.

Gallagher called 911 on Friday and  surrendered to police when they arrived.

He told police that he was upset over the bedbugs in the apartment and that nothing he did would get rid of them.

According to a probably cause affidavit, Gallagher told police he feared their landlord was going to refuse to renew their lease because of the bedbugs, and his mother “has a lot of things to move.”

An autopsy found that Gallagher’s mother died of “complex homicidal violence.”

He is charged with a single count of second-degree unpremeditated murder.
