PAYNE COUNTY, Okla. – A man is behind bars after leading troopers on a chase through the Turner Turnpike.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol says Nicholas McCarty, 21, was taken into custody after stealing a red pickup and leading troopers on a pursuit that started in Payne County.

OHP says the situation started when they received a call about a person being shot in the leg and having their vehicle stolen near Sexton Street just north of Sac and Fox Road and just east of Schlegel Road in Payne County.

Troopers noticed a pickup fitting the description of the one reported stolen on Highway 33 heading eastbound. Troopers say they attempted to make a traffic stop and the driver sped off and a chase ensued.

OHP says McCarty then drove on to the Turner Turnpike heading westbound.

Troopers were able to stop McCarty and say they found a gun, meth, and marijuana in the vehicle.
