SPENCER, Okla. - Since November, Henri Wilson's phone bill has tripled.
“They say, 'Pay $128 by the 12th of January,'” Wilson said.
She was enrolled in Lifeline Oklahoma.
The government benefit program provides low-income people with discounts on their monthly telephone service.
Wilson’s phone service is through AT&T, but it’s the Universal Service Administrative Company, an independent not-for-profit corporation, that oversees and pays for the federally mandated Lifeline assistance program.
Wilson said her discount was terminated, and she can't figure out why.
“I have to have phone service to call my doctor, get my ride, my sooner ride to the doctor [or] call the ambulance,” she said.
We alerted AT&T and Lifeline.
Because of customer privacy laws, we didn't get much information out of them.
Wilson said, right after we left her house Wednesday, she got a call from AT&T telling her she just barely makes too much money to qualify for Lifeline.
While we work to verify that claim, we surprised Wilson with a $150 anonymous donation to help her with bills.
“I can't believe that somebody gave me [this],” she said. "I appreciate it."
AT&T said they were working with Wilson to help her reapply for her Lifeline benefits.
