MESA, Ariz. – It’s a horrific case of child abuse that shocked the nation.
Authorities in Arizona arrested a man and a woman after a 3-year-old girl was found in a trash bag with duct tape around her mouth, hands, arms and legs. Police say she was only wearing a diaper and a t-shirt and was “covered in feces.”
The investigation began after a man came forward, saying that he saw the little girl being neglected and believed she was a sex trafficking victim. The man claimed that 30-year-old Fransisco Javier Rios-Covarrubias asked him if he wanted to have sex with the child.
“This is one of those cases that just shocks the soul,” said Chief John Meza, with the Mesa Police Department.
Rios-Covarrubias is facing charges of sex trafficking, kidnapping, sex conduct with a minor and child abuse.
Also, the little girl’s mother, Mayra Yomali Solis, is facing charges of child abuse.
Now, family members of the child are speaking out, saying they had no idea the little girl was being abused.
“No one knew, ” one relative said. “It breaks our hearts. We would’ve done anything to stop it from happening.”
“We had the idea that she was living with the perfect family and with another little kid,” she said. “We didn’t know. She had the perfect facade.”
Now, the relatives say they are fighting for custody of the child.
“I don’t know how anyone could do that to a child,” she said. “Such an innocent person, what’s been going through your head for that to happen?”
