ROSWELL, N.M. – An attack by a convicted child molester in court shocked everyone, including the court’s deputy.

“I have never seen this happen, ever. I mean, I have seen it on TV but I’ve never experienced it or seen it in person,” said KaeDea Smith, the officer who tackled the suspect.

According to KRQE, 31-year-old Michael Cox had just been found guilty of criminal sexual contact for fondling a girl when he attacked the prosecutor.

Surveillance cameras were rolling as Cox allegedly shoved Deputy District Attorney Scot Key to the ground and attempted to punch him.

“I was able to get a hold of the defendant and use the least amount of force possible to go ahead and detain him to get him under control,” Smith told KRQE.

Cox has yet to be sentenced and could face other charges for the attack.
