MIAMI, Fla. – It’s a common practice to search for a roommate or a place to live online.

However, one Florida mother says her daughter’s injuries should serve as a warning to others.

According to WPLG, Danielle Jones was searching for a roommate and placed an advertisement on Craigslist.

Authorities say Byron Mitchell responded to the ad and moved in to Jones’ apartment.

Just one week later, Jones was fighting for her life.

“He beat her to a coma and ventilator support with various face and skull fractures, multiple injuries to include multiple cuts on her face... She was celebrating her 23rd birthday,” Jones’ mother, Aimee Cabo Nikolov, said.

Police say Mitchell admitted to the attack, but he claims it was in self-defense.

“Self-defense would be a black eye, a broken nose. He’s 6’2″, 160 pounds, he’s athletic, he could have knocked her out,” Nikolov said. “Not only did he admit in the police report to banging her head against the floor and choking her, but the mutilation of her face is the M.O. of a serial killer.”

Doctors believe Jones may have serious brain damage.

Now, Mitchell is facing an attempted murder charge.
