Two Jacksonville, Florida deputies patrolling the seas, came upon a huge find two miles offshore – a 9-foot leatherback sea turtle entangled in the ropes of a crab trap.

Lt. Steve Mullen and Officer Brad Smith acted fast to cut the rope that was bound tightly around the exhausted turtle’s neck and flippers.

The buoy was keeping the huge turtle afloat and it would’ve eventually starved had the deputies not found it.

They say each time the turtle tried to dive beneath the water, the rope tightened.

Fortunately, Lt. Mullen acted fast with his knife.

Once freed, the lucky turtle darted away beneath the water.
