OKLAHOMA - Thursday was a special day for a two-year-old who has been battling cancer.
Jase Bollenbach has always wanted to be a firefighter, and his dream came true when the Oklahoma City Fire Department surprised him.
The family just lost Jase’s six-year-old brother, Kaden, to cancer four days before.
So, seeing little Jase become a firefighter for a day really put a smile on their faces.
Since he was just 16 months, Jase has been fighting a rare form of cancer - the same his brother had.
"ATRT: it's a rhabdoid tumor. At the time, they found a tumor had engrossed his whole left kidney. He had one in his pelvis and one in his brain," said Shannon Bollenbach, Jase’s mother.
He has gone through multiple operations and weeks of chemo and radiation.
After treatment at OU Children’s Thursday, Jase was not so happy, but that quickly changed when he was met by firefighters and a big red engine.
A little hesitant at first, Jase got in, buckled up and ready to go.
The sirens sounded, and he was off to the fire station.
"He was talking the whole time, asking questions, how you work everything, what everything did," said Russel Huffman, an Oklahoma City Fire Major.
When he got to the station, his face really lit up.
Jase got to slide down a pole, use the water hose, a badge and was even named an Oklahoma City Firefighter.
"You have no idea the joy on his face. There's been so much hurt on his face and pain lately," his mother said. "Seeing him happy, he needed it. He deserved it. We all did. I can't thank the Oklahoma City Fire Department enough. I mean, this is something we will all remember forever.”
As Jase was learning, everyone around him learned something, too.
"Take everything and just have fun with it, just enjoy every little thing that comes around," Huffman said.
"To love hard, because you never know when the next day will be," Shannon said.
After the trip to the fire station, Jase got to enjoy a special dinner with firefighters.
We learned that Jase has one round of chemo left, but his battle is not over.
There is a GoFundMe account set up for him if you would like to help.
