Two children were taken to the hospital in critical condition after being struck by an SUV after getting ice cream.

The 8-year-old and 7-year-old girl had just made a purchase Saturday afternoon from an ice cream truck, according to 12News. They were crossing the road when they were struck by an SUV, officials said.

The children were treated on the scene then taken to Phoenix Children's Hospital in critical condition.

Josue Cardenas was a passenger in the SUV that struck the children. Cardenas said he prayed over the kids as soon as he got out of the vehicle.

“They ran into the street, basically, while we were driving. And that’s how they got hit. My friend was going about 20-25 mph," Cardenas said.

The boy was listed as stable, and the girl is in critical condition, police said.

The driver was taken into custody but is currently not charged with any crimes related to the children.
