FORT GIBSON, Okla. – Authorities say the body of a man has been recovered after an empty boat was found at Fort Gibson Lake.

The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office began searching for the man on Sunday, but were forced to call off the search overnight.

On Monday morning, officials say they found the body of 51-year-old Samuel Howe about 60 yards north of the boat ramp.

Crews say they used sight imaging sonar around 7 a.m. before finding Howe’s body in about 11 feet of water.

He was not wearing a life preserver.
