ELKHORN, Wis. – A school district in Wisconsin is investigating after racist chants directed at a visiting soccer team brought some players to tears.
Officials with the Elkhorn Public School District told WTMJ that a group of students shouted slurs at minority players on the Beloit Memorial girl’s soccer team.
“Saying comments like, ‘Donald Trump, build that wall,” said Vania Perez, a junior varsity player for Beloit Memorial.
“Go back to your country,’ and just calling us idiots and we’re stupid,” said Kassumy Montil.
The coach for Beloit Memorial told WISC that the chants really affected his players.
“They came off the field and weren’t able to finish the game because they were too upset and distraught over what happened to them,” Brian Denu said. “One of the girls was cradled in the arms of one of our assistant coaches for a good 15 to 20 minutes.”
Elkhorn officials confirmed that some students on the sidelines were yelling offensive comments and that the matter is being investigated.
