JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. - A retired U.S. Air Force veteran is behind bars after allegedly shooting and killing a stranger in a Virginia grocery store.

On Sunday morning, officers rushed to the Farm Fresh grocery store after learning about a shooting.

When they arrived, 55-year-old Brian Alexander Hicks surrendered.

Authorities told WTVR that they discovered the body of 34-year-old Gabriel Ryan Maness inside the store.

Witnesses say Maness was shopping when he was shot multiple times by Hicks.

Police say they are 'puzzled' because there didn't appear to be any type of altercation between the two men. In fact, they say there is no indication that the pair even knew each other.

Hicks was arrested for second-degree murder and use of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
