COLUMBIA GORGE, Ore. – A 37-year-old mother died trying to save her 3-year-old son during a hike on Sunday afternoon.

Investigators told KGW that Stephanie Cohen was on a family hike with six other people, including her four children.

Her two older children hiked down the trail when her husband took 3-year-old Oliver off of his shoulders and put him down.

“Oliver was getting close to the edge and his foot wiggled on a rock and he started to go down. She just did what she instinctively thought to do and that was go after him,” Lisa Schroeder, Cohen’s mother, said.

Cohen and Oliver fell 50 to 60 feet off the cliff, rescue crews said.

Amazingly, Oliver survived the fall but was seriously injured and rushed to Oregon Health and Science University Hospital.

Cohen succumbed to her injuries.
