VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – A battle is brewing between two neighbors. At the center of the controversy- a symbol of America’s freedom.

Michael Anderson has filed three criminal charges against his neighbor, John Parmele.

According to court documents,  Anderson claims Parmele stole his American flag on two separate occasions.

Parmele wouldn’t tell WAVY if he, in fact, stole the flags, but said that Anderson was disrespecting veterans.

Parmele, a Navy veteran, says he asked his neighbor to illuminate the flag at night, to become compliant with federal code.

Federal code says American flags should be “properly illuminated during the hours of darkness.”

“I feel like it’s a personal affront towards me and disrespect toward the veterans and all Americans for that matter, because it’s just not supposed to be done,” Parmele told WAVY.
