OKLAHOMA CITY – Parents and school leaders will find out what else is on the chopping block as the Oklahoma City Public School District looks to finalize another $7 million in cuts.

“This is a very difficult time,” Oklahoma City Public Schools Associate Superintendent Aurora Lora told KFOR last week. “These are some of the deepest cuts I’ve ever seen to a school district, and we’re having to cut things that are really, really important to our schools, so this is an extremely difficult time to step into this role.”

In March, the district announced it would be cutting 208 teaching positions to save money.

Then, a couple weeks later, the district decided to lay off about 18 percent of its administrative staff.

Last week, district leaders announced $10 million in cuts which focused on delaying purchasing new textbooks, cutting school supply budgets, cutting funding for student testing, reducing contracts with outside vendors and delaying purchases of athletic equipment.

The cuts bring the district to $23 million in reductions.

However, the district was told to prepare for $30 million in cuts, meaning another $7 million in cuts must still be made.

“We are doing the best we can with the $30 million in cuts and trying to do everything possible not to impact students,” Lora said. “But, $30 million is a huge blow to the district.”

Ideas to make up that $7 million include consolidating schools, suspending athletics and arts programs and additional staffing reductions.

Those budget cuts will be announced during the Oklahoma City Public Schools Board of Education Meeting on Monday evening.
