HERRIMAN, Utah - A teenager was rushed to the hospital in critical condition following a violent and unprovoked attack by his best friend.

KSTU reports that the 17-year-old victim allowed his best friend to stay the night on Friday.

On Saturday morning, family members say they awoke to screams.

Police say the teen's friend stabbed him with a samurai sword while he was sleeping.

Authorities say the sword went "all the way through" his gut.

"The father jumped out of bed, ran upstairs and confronted our suspect - the 17-year-old- who was trying to obtain another weapon to stab the kid again," said Lt. Lex Bell, of the Unified Police Department.

The alleged suspect was fighting the victim's father as his mother called 911.

However, even officers couldn't get control of the teen.

"There was still a huge physical fight going on, our officer tried to use a taser on our 17-year-old suspect," he said. "The taser was ineffective."

Firefighters arrived on the scene but weren't supposed to go into the house until the scene was secure.

But firefighters decided to disregard policy.

When they went inside, they not only tended to the victim but helped police subdue the suspect.

Police say the suspect may have been under the influence of a drug or suffered a 'psychotic breakdown.'

At this point, it is still unknown why the suspect attacked his friend.
