TULSA, Okla. – A Tulsa mother who was arrested on child abuse charges could now be facing murder charges after the death of her 7-month-old baby.

On Tuesday, the infant was rushed to the hospital after he was found unresponsive, KJRH reports.

“This little boy was found to have a brain injury that usually comes from some kind of strike or shake, it’s not something that is an accidental injury.” Cpl. Greg Smith said.

Investigators determined the child’s mother, Ruth Lewis, likely caused the injury.

Throughout the investigation, authorities found that Lewis’ 16-month-old daughter also showed signs of neglect.

“[She] had severe, untreated diaper rash that should’ve been cared for,” Smith said.

The little girl was taken into DHS custody, KJRH reports.

On Thursday, police told KJRH the 7-month-old child’s prognosis is “not good.”

Later, officials confirmed the child passed away.

Lewis was arrested and charged with child abuse and two counts of child neglect.

However, she could now be facing an additional charge of murder.
