CALGARY, Canada – A Canadian couple is on trial for murder for allegedly letting their 15-year-old son die.

In 2013, authorities say 15-year-old Alexandru Radita, who was diabetic, died from complications of starvation and neglect.

According to the Canada National Post, Alexandru was emaciated and extremely thin when paramedics arrived at his home.

“He basically looked like a skeleton with skin,” said Shauna Mitchell, an investigator with the medical examiner’s office, testified.

In fact, investigators say he only weighed about 37 pounds when he died.

Authorities arrested Alexandru’s parents, Emil and Rodica, for first-degree murder.

During testimony in the trial, Mitchell testified that the couple found Alexandru not breathing and decided to pray for him instead of calling for help.

“They said they went to church at, I think it was after 1800 hours, and they came home at about 2000 hours and that’s when the father said that he wasn’t breathing, so they prayed and they didn’t call EMS until sometime around 2200 hours,” Mitchell said.

The Canada National Post reports that the couple believed doctors were to blame for Alexandru’s diabetes, so they didn’t want to take him for medical help.
