WEST MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A 16-year-old boy’s life has been changed thanks to the power of social media.

Matt White says he was shopping for groceries at Kroger when he was approached by a teenager.

The teen introduced himself as Chauncy and offered to help White carry his groceries to his car in exchange for a pack of glazed doughnuts.

“This kid looked like he had been turned down 100 times. He looked ashamed, hungry and broken,” White wrote on Facebook.

Instead, White agreed to purchase several groceries and basic necessities for Chauncy and his mother, with whom he lives.

“All the while¬†we talked and he told me how he makes straight A’s in school and is trying to get a job to help his mom pay rent. This kid was amazing. Chauncy kept calling himself poor, but he told me that one day he was gonna be wealthy and own his own businesses so that he could help other people in his neighborhood and buy them groceries like me. I was in awe,” White wrote.

When White brought Chauncy and the groceries home, he noticed that they were sleeping on the floor and didn’t have anything in the refrigerator.

White posted his story on Facebook and received an outpouring of support from strangers, asking how they could help the family.

White took Chauncy to church and took him to lunch to create a video. In the video, they asked for clothes and a push lawnmower so that Chauncy could cut lawns to make some money.

Due to so much attention, White created a GoFundMe account to help raise $250 for a lawnmower, $10 for a Ross gift card and shirts and pants for Chauncy.

In less than two weeks, the GoFundMe account has jumped to more than $23,000.
