LAS ANIMAS COUNTY, Colo. – A 4-year-old girl is the sole survivor of a car accident that claimed the lives of her immediate family.

Family members told KRDO that Steve Miller, his wife Christina and their four daughters were heading to church when their van was hit by an Amtrak train.

“Their family was pretty much how they looked. Steve was simple, and I don’t think I ever met anyone that didn’t like Steve. He was one of those guys that everybody loved,” said Keith Schlabach, the victim’s cousin.

The Colorado State Patrol says all of the children were under the age of six.

Tragically, a 4-year-old girl was the only member of the family who survived the crash.

She was flown to a Denver hospital with serious injuries.

Churchgoers knew something was wrong when the family didn’t show up for church, so they went to find them.

“Most of us went out to the scene, waiting to hear for sure if it was them or not. And, you know, like I said, ¬†we were reasonably sure because they weren’t answering their phones,” Schlabach said.

Schlabach says the 4-year-old realized what happened and knows that she is the only one who survived.

The family started a GoFundMe page to raise money for funeral arrangements.
