ROUND ROCK, Texas – Police in Texas are searching for two suspects after a sergeant with the sheriff’s office was shot and killed in his own backyard.

Sheriff officials say Sgt. Craig Hutchinson radioed the department around 1:22 a.m. on Monday, saying he saw suspects running around his backyard.

Ten minutes later, deputies arrived and found Hutchinson suffering from a gunshot wound. Tragically, he died at a nearby hospital.

“Our officer came up on them and found individuals in his shed and I think that’s when the confrontation occurred,” Sheriff Greg Hamilton, with the Travis County Sheriff’s Office, told KXAN.

Hamilton also said he did not believe Hutchinson was targeted. Instead, he says there have been several burglaries in the area recently.

So far, no arrests have been made in the case.

KXAN reports that Hutchinson has served on the force for 32 years and was planning on retiring in September.
