REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala. – Less than two weeks after leaving Fort Sill, an Army commander has died.
Major General Rossi, 55, just left Fort Sill on July 21 to assume command of the United States Army Space and Missile Defense Command- Army Forces Strategic Command in Alabama.
The SMDC Change of Command ceremony was to take place Tuesday.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Maj. Gen. John G. Rossi’s family. We share their grief during this time of loss. Our priority right now is to take care of the family, ensuring they have all the resources they need during this critical time,” said Lt. Gen. Larry Wyche,Army Materiel Command deputy commanding general and Redstone Arsenal senior commander.
On Tuesday, Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin released a statement on the passing of the former Fort Sill commanding general.
“Maj. Gen. John Rossi was a dedicated public servant, as well as a strong and capable leader for Fort Sill during his time as commanding general. We worked together for many years while he was stationed in Oklahoma," she said. "Maj. Gen. Rossi’s devotion to the men and women under his command were apparent to all who knew him. My thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.”
Officials have not released what caused Rossi’s death.
As is standard protocol, the criminal investigative division is investigating Rossi's death, WHNT reports.
Investigators don't suspect foul play in Rossi's death, but they haven't ruled anything out.
His body will be sent for autopsy at Ft. Campbell in Kentucky.
He leaves behind a wife, three children and one grandchild.
