Thunder Center Enes Kanter has been disowned by his family for his political beliefs. Kanter is a supporter of the Gulen Movement which tried to impose Martial Law on Turkey in July.

His Father, Mehmet Kanter, who supports Turkish president Recep Tayyip, told the Daily Sabah, “His statements and behavior trouble our family. I told Enes we will disown him should he not change his course. He did not care.”

The elder Kanter added, “I would not have taken Enes to the U.S. for the basketball camp where his talent was discovered had I known that it would come to this point.”

Kanter has tweeted insulting things towards Turkey’s president. His father claims him and Enes have not had contact since 2015. The soon to be third year Thunder big man has tweeted he would sacrifice his mother, father and whole family for Gulen’s sake.

Bilal Kanter, who is Enes’ cousin, says he wishes that the 24 year old Thunder player wouldn’t bear the Kanter name.
