SAN YSIDRO, Calif. – A man and woman were arrested on suspicion of murder after they attempted to enter Mexico with a duffel bag containing the body of a dead toddler, police said.

Homicide detectives say Johnny Lewis Hartley, 39, and Mercy Mary Becerra, 43, were arrested Tuesday and booked into jail on one count of murder.

Mexican police contacted the San Diego Police Department after the couple had been stopped by customs agents at the border.

According to KTLA, when the couple was stopped, Becerra allegedly ran away and Hartley was taken into custody with a duffel bag.

That is when Mexican authorities discovered the child’s body.

Police believe the deceased child is two years old.

Officials told KTLA that the couple is not the girl’s parents.

Mexican authorities found Becerra and took her into custody as well.

Becerra and Hartley were both turned over to U.S. investigators.

They were both booked into jail on suspicion of first-degree murder and child cruelty.

The couple is scheduled to be arraigned Friday.
