BEAUFORT COUNTY, S.C. – Jeff Collins says he is heartbroken after his 11-year-old daughter contracted a deadly amoeba.

In late July, Collins took his daughter Hannah to the river, where she jumped into the water using a rope swing.

A short time later, Hannah was diagnosed with a ‘brain-eating’ amoeba.

While she was in the hospital, Collins was taken to jail for back child support.

He tells WCSC that Hannah lived with him most of the time, but estimates that he owes about $5,000.

Collins was able to see Hannah in the hospital once, but she died the next day.

“I didn’t get to say my last goodbyes,” he said.

After Hannah’s death, a judge released Collins so he could help plan her funeral.
