U.S. women’s soccer team eliminated from Olympic play by Sweden

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil- It was a stunning upset for the United States on Friday afternoon.

The United States women’s soccer team was eliminated from the Olympic Games by Sweden in the quarterfinal match.

After a scoreless first half, Stina Blackstenius scored in the 61st minute to give Sweden a 1-0 lead. USA’s Alex Morgan scored the equalizer in the 78th minute, sending the match into overtime.

The match eventually went to penalty kicks, where the United States lost.

The United States are the defending world champions after winning the 2015 Women’s World CupĀ .

Team USA has played in the final every year since women’s soccer became an Olympic sport in 1996.

The team has won gold four times.
