RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil – While the Olympic Games are officially over, the stories of many of the athletes who competed continue.
It was a moment that many people did not notice, but it is now causing many Americans to burst with pride.
Sam Kendricks, 23, was competing in the pole vaulting competition and was preparing for qualifying jump when he abruptly stopped.
Kendricks, a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Reserve, heard ‘The Star- Spangled Banner’ playing in the background and immediately stopped to stand at attention and pay his respect to the national anthem.
Kendricks went on to win a bronze medal in the contest, becoming the first American to take home a medal in that event since 2004.
