Gulf Shores, AL – An Alabama girl decided to use her birthday as a chance to prove it’s truly better to give than receive.

Mia Lawley just turned 7.

Instead of asking for birthday presents, she asked for donations to the Rivers of Love Animal Rescue, a nonprofit that fosters rescue dogs.

Mia’s mom, Nikki Lawley, said her daughter knew she wanted to hold a fundraiser.

When Mom suggested collecting donations, Mia was more than happy to make the sacrifice.

Mia’s aunt posted a picture of Mia with dozens of donations on Facebook and said Mia has such a kind and loving heart for all animals and wanted to do something special this year.

Her parents said this has been a learning experience for their daughter.

Mia hopes this can set off a domino effect and others will show acts of kindness as well.

“It would be such a blessing for this to motivate others to donate as well, whether it be to Rivers of Love or any rescue effort,” said a spokesperson with Rivers of Love.

Rivers of Love accepts donations any time of the year.

Things that are greatly appreciated are food (most of their animals are on Nutro Max dry dog food), treats, cleaners, paper towels, kennel fans, toys, flea/tick medicine and monetary donations.

They’re at Petsmart in Spanish Fort every 4th Saturday of the month.
