TULSA, Okla. – A former band instructor at Union Public Schools has been sentenced to 13 years in federal prison after he admitted exchanging sexually explicit photos with a 12-year-old girl in Canada.

Federal prosecutors say 32-year-old James Russell Wilson of Tulsa was sentenced Wednesday after pleading guilty in June to one count of receiving child pornography. As part of the plea agreement, prosecutors dropped charges of sexual exploitation of a child, possession of child pornography and transfer of obscene materials to a minor.

According to court documents, Wilson found the public profile of a 12-year-old girl on Instagram then contacted her on the messaging app Kik. Prosecutors say Wilson eventually sent and requested sexually explicit photos from the girl.

Wilson was suspended from his job at Union Public Schools and later resigned.
