OKLAHOMA CITY - An Oklahoma mother who ran into a burning apartment to save her child has died from her injuries.

Early Tuesday morning, firefighters rushed to the London Square Apartments after getting a frantic 911 call from neighbors.

“There’s a big fire,” she said to a dispatcher. “There’s a baby inside, and we can’t get him out. There’s a lady in there, too.”

A group of five neighbors took action quickly, grabbing whatever they could get their hands on.

“Water buckets, pots, pans, whatever we could find. If it had water in it, we were going to throw it,” one neighbor said. “We could at least keep it from spreading. I think we did a good job. It was starting to spread to the breezeway, but we were able to keep it just to that apartment.”

Investigators said there were four people inside the apartment when the flames took over.

Not everyone made it out.

“It was reported to us that the mother had taken the two infants out first and was on her way back inside to try to get the 4-year-old when she was overtaken by the fire,” said Benny Fulkerson, with the Oklahoma City Fire Department.

Firefighters were able to find the woman and get her out of the home through a window. A short time later, they discovered the 4-year-old boy.

Tragically, the little boy died from his injuries.

According to the Oklahoma State Medical Examiner’s Office, the boy was identified as 4-year-old Zcarice Zeus Moore. Officials determined that he died from smoke inhalation from the fire.

His manner of death has been ruled an accident.

The boy's mother was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition following the fire.

Early Thursday morning, sources confirmed to NewsChannel 4 that the woman, Donna Burrell, died from her injuries she sustained in the fire.
