Baker Mayfield entered the Cotton Bowl for his second Red River Showdown in a walking boot. That fueled speculation about his availability for the game. However he trotted out there with the offense to open the game and led the Sooners down the field. It resulted in a missed Austin Seibert 49 yard field goal.
The Sooners would force a three and out, and turn it over on a Baker Mayfield interception.
OU didn't get any favors on their next drive. Baker Mayfield threw another interception to Dylan Haines on a play that saw Geno Lewis get tackled before the ball got to him with no call. It would lead to a 33 yard field goal by Trent Domingue. The Horns had a 3-0 lead.
The following Texas possession, Obo Okoronkwo forced a D'Onta Foreman fumble recovered by Steven Parker and the Sooners inside the Texas 20. Samaje Perine blasted it in from two yards out to give Oklahoma a 7-3 lead.
Injuries piled up in the secondary for the Sooners during this game. Michiah Quick had to leave after getting chop blocked. Ahmad Thomas walked off the field after he took a D'Onta Foreman knee to the helmet on a tackle.
Texas took the lead from the Sooners in the second quarter. D'Onta Foreman powered it in from two yards out to give Texas a 10-7 advantage.
Oklahoma took control later in the quarter when Baker Mayfield connected with Dede Westbrook on a 71 yard touchdown strike. The Sooners had a 14-10 lead.
Texas would add a field goal right before the half, but the Sooners held the advantage 14-13.
The Longhorns received the second half kickoff and made the most of the possession. Garrett Buchele connected with Devin Duvernay on a 63 yard touchdown pass. Texas took the lead 20-14.
It didn't take long for OU to respond. Baker Mayfield threw his second touchdown of the day to Dede Westbrook, this one of the 42 yard variety. It gave Oklahoma a slim 21-20 lead.
Then the game turned into a shoot out. Buechele hit Dorian Leonard for a 45 yard touchdown and Texas retook the lead 27-21.
Baker Mayfield then finished off a drive with a 7 yard touchdown run to give OU the lead again, 28-27.
OU wasn't done. After that, Mayfield connected with Dede Westbrook for a third touchdown of the game. This one a 47 yarder to pad the Sooners lead 35-27.
After that Joe Mixon muffed a punt deep in his own territory, but Midwest City's own Will Sunderland intercepted a Garrett Buchele pass to give it back to the Sooners.
That led to a 3 yard Samaje Perine touchdown. His second of the game. OU up 42-27 on the Horns.
Texas didn't roll over though. They answered with a 9 yard touchdown pass from Garrett Buchele to Amanti Foreman. Sooners still had the edge 42-34.
Austin Siebert padded Oklahoma's lead with a 39 yard field goal on a drive that ate up over seven minutes. Sooners up 45-34.
Texas would inch closer though on a 22 yard D'Onta Foreman touchdown run. The Horns decided to go for two but missed. OU had a 45-40 advantage.
The Sooners would have to give it back to Texas, they tried to run a wild last play, but it was all for not. Oklahoma hangs on to beat Texas 45-40. Sooners have now won five of the last seven games.
Baker Mayfield went 22-31, 390 yards and three touchdowns and two interceptions. That's the most ever in the Red River Showdown. All three of his touchdowns went to Dede Westbrook who hauled in 10 catches, for 232 yards.
Samaje Perine rushed it 35 times for 214 yards and two touchdowns. Westbrook and Perine's combined day of going over 200 yards receiving and rushing gave OU their first 200-200 game in school history.
