CHICAGO, Ill. – An Illinois father is racked with grief after his daughter attempted to get in contact with him while she was dying.

Police say 27-year-old Julia Martin had called off an engagement with her boyfriend of three years and wanted to return his engagement ring.

Before that meeting, authorities say he forced open the door to her apartment and stabbed her repeatedly. He then jumped to his death from her apartment.

According to the Chicago Tribune, Martin grabbed her phone and called police.

While waiting for an ambulance, Martin reportedly called and texted her father.

“Not only did she call me, she texted me while she was going through all this,” Derrick Martin told the Chicago Tribune. “She was calling everybody, saying that she wanted help. She called another friend and she was panting over the phone, trying to get her breath. He thought it was a prank and he hung up on her. He feels so bad.”

Derrick didn’t get his daughter’s messages until it was too late.

Julia Martin was pronounced dead at an area hospital.
