OKLAHOMA - Basic necessities fell by the wayside after drug addiction brought Micki Petty's grandchildren to her.
"I didn't buy a new pair of shoes for seven years, trying to get my grandchildren clothes," Petty said. "We live in a one bedroom house, and we have two beds in there and then my grandson can sleep in the living room.”
The Pettys are not the only grandparents enduring the hardship to keep their families together.
That is why about 600 grandchildren are getting a surprise from the Oklahoma City Police Department, Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office and volunteers.
The agencies are going on a shopping spree ahead of the holidays.
"On the sheet, they know the sex of the child. They know their favorite color. They know a wishlist of basic things, so they know if they're into art supplies," said Deputy Kim Lopez with the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office.
It's in partnership with Sunbeam Family Services.
The non-profit gets hundreds of applications each year.
The stories are heart-wrenching.
"We have one grand family that is raising 13 kids by them self and, when I looked at their sheet, it literally brought tears. Everyone wanted their own blanket last year," Lopez said.
Petty's grandchildren are 13 and 15, but she's been raising them since they were 5 and 7.
"We live in a very small house, but we're all happy, and we're all together and we're a family."
And, she can't wait to see their faces when they get what's on their wish list.
"Ink posters. I've never heard of those things before, and an art set. She's very good about drawing," Petty said. "Now, my grandson likes to play basketball, and he's in love with the Thunder."
And, it's apparent the officials are having a good time helping others.
"Yeah, we say, if you don't have any fun today, then it's your own fault, because they're spending someone else's money, and they're making someone's Christmas," Lopez said.
They are still looking for monetary donations.
