INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - A 4-year-old girl and her mother were rushed to the hospital after the child found a loaded gun and fired it.

According to WGHP, police say the child shot herself in the face with a gun she found on her parents' nightstand.

Investigators believe the same bullet hit her mother in the back of the head.

"When officers arrived, they came into contact with the father of the 4-year-old who stated that he and his fiance were asleep when he was awakened by the sound of the gunshot," an alert from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department read.

Authorities say the 4-year-old child was taken to a nearby hospital in stable condition. The mother was rushed into surgery but was conscious and alert when she was transported from the scene.
