PHOENIX, Ariz. –  A 14-year-old boy knew he had to do something when he saw smoke coming from his home while on the way to school.

According to KPHO, the 14-year-old boy was on his school bus and saw smoke pouring from his home on Friday morning.

The bus driver pulled over, but told Mike Assi to not get off the bus. However, Assi says he knew there was one member of his family trapped inside the home.

He immediately jumped off the bus and ran to the door to let his dog outside.

“The bus driver was yelling me telling me not go in but I just had to open the door,” said the teen, Mike Assi, who is a student at Deer Valley Middle School. “I had to at least yell for my dog to see if I could give him a chance to come out. I was just worried about him. I wasn’t scared about my well being. I was worried about him because he’s family.”

The home suffered extensive damage but Assi’s dog is OK.
