GATLINBURG, Tenn. – Daryl and Robert Hullander have been married 57 years, and recently put their bodies to the test when their lives were on the line.
The couple was in their bed and breakfast when the fire in Gatlinburg started creeping toward their property.
They abandoned their home with nothing but the clothes on their back and began going down the mountain in the dark.
“Fire was blowing across the road, so I didn’t know of another way to get down from where we were easy,” Robert Hullander told WBIR.
The pair used trees to hold on to while they trusted their feet to get them to safety.
“You put one foot in front of the other and you just keep on going and if you fall, you get up and you keep on going,” he said.
They have lost everything, but are happy to have each other.
“You can’t buy your body but you can buy things, so you just don’t fret about what you’ve lost,” he said.
