Fatal wreck on I-35

OKLAHOMA CITY – A little bit of winter precipitation wreaked havoc on Oklahoma roadways and claimed several lives on Thursday evening.

Officials in the Oklahoma City area responded to more than 100 traffic accidents, including three fatalities.

Around 8:45 p.m., emergency crews were called to an accident along northbound I-35 at Hefner Rd. in Oklahoma City.

Investigators say 62-year-old Verlan K. Raines was driving a 2006 Toyota Tacoma  when he left the roadway to the right. Authorities believe Raines over corrected, sending the vehicle across the road to the left and hitting a barrier.

At that point, the Tacoma left the road and rolled an unknown number of times before coming to rest on the passenger side of the vehicle.

Investigators say Raines was ejected approximately 46 feet from the vehicle, and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities say the airbags in the vehicle did not deploy and Raines was not wearing his seat belt.
