OKLAHOMA CITY – More than 400 hot meals were served Wednesday to metro residents in need.
The Homeless Alliance Day Shelter, along with several restaurants, prepared a pre-Thanksgiving lunch on Wednesday.
And, for many who turned out, the meal was more than just a delicious lunch.
“We don’t need to be upset and griping around this time,” said Lacie Wallace. “You know, we have to be together and love each other because Thanksgiving, it’s giving thanks to God for what we had.”
Wallace recently got back on her feet, said she was homeless at one point and the shelter is like a second home.
“A lot of these people, I consider my family,” she said. "And, a lot of us, people out here don’t have families to go to and they’re on their own.”
Walter Rivers also found comfort at the pre-Thanksgiving meal. He, too, has been homeless.
“It just made me stronger,” he said. “I think about God every day and, when I’m in my own place, I even pray before I go to bed - ‘thank you, Lord, thank you to these people for doing everything for me.’”
Even those serving the meals felt connected.
“It makes me a ton more grateful to have the opportunity to come here and serve for Thanksgiving,” said volunteer Heather Poposki.
And, for those at the shelter, they have a message for everyone out there this holiday season.
“Money doesn’t bring happiness, you know, the old saying,” Wallace said. “Just having people that you love, and care for you and is there for you whenever you need them to be.”
