DOUGLAS FLAT, Calif. - A family in California is in shock after an accident on Thanksgiving night claimed the lives of a mother and a toddler.

Officials with the California Highway Patrol say Sarah Rohde was driving on Hwy 4 when a black bear stopped in front of her vehicle.

Rohde had no time to stop, hitting the bear.

In addition to killing the bear, the impact of the crash killed Rohde and her 1-year-old daughter, Ariana Harris.

"I don't know if my life will ever be the same," Dajon Harris told FOX 40.

Harris, Rohde's fiancee, says his daughter was sweet and sassy. As for Rohde, he says she was smart, fearless, kind and had a great sense of humor. The couple had been together for eight years and were planning on buying a house together.

Rohde leaves behind a 4-year-old son, Julian, who was in the car at the time of the crash. However, he managed to escape with only minor injuries.
