OKLAHOMA CITY – Police officers across the country are tasked with protecting and serving their communities, but a group of local officers decided to go above the call of duty to help a family in need.
Officers with the Oklahoma City Police Department received a call from a woman who said she was having problems with her son. The woman told officers that her son had been sneaking out and wandering off without telling her where he was going.
The officer met with the child and learned that the little boy’s father had just left them and they were struggling to make ends meet. The child had decided to take matters into his own hands and had been sneaking out to collect cans to raise money for his mother.
“He was so proud that he had $13 already!” the department wrote on its Facebook page.
Instead of telling the boy’s secret to his mom, the officer went to the department for help. The second shift officers at Southwest Division all chipped in and raised approximately $800 for the family this Christmas.
