MIDWEST CITY, Okla. – A young man was shot and killed after he broke into his ex-girlfriend’s home armed and assaulted her.

Around 1 a.m. Thursday, Midwest City police responded to a shooting death in the 9600 block of Willow Wind, near SE 15th and Post Rd.

Police said an 18-year-old woman claims she shot and killed her 21-year-old ex-boyfriend on what appears to be self-defense.

“The suspect came into the house without permission through an unlocked bathroom window, began assaulting her. She fired, at least, one shot maybe more, striking the suspect and eventually killing him,” said Police Chief Brandon Clabes, Midwest City Police Department.

Police said this is the fourth case in Midwest City falling under the criteria of the ‘Make My Day’ law.

“It allows you to protect yourself when you’re in your home from a violent act,” Clabes said.

Here’s what we know about the former couple’s past:

  • The woman filed a victim’s protective order against her ex for allegedly trying to kidnap and assault her with a handgun back in January of last year.
  • The protective order was dismissed in August of 2015 when both parties didn’t show up to court.
  • In September, the District Attorney said the victim retracted her story and all charges against her ex-boyfriend were dropped.

“It’s very unfortunate you have loss of life especially probably over a domestic situation,” Clabes said. “Everything appears to be within the boundaries of a justifiable shooting.”

Neighbors were shocked to hear the news, but some said people have the right to protect themselves.

“If someone is breaking into your house, you feel threatened, you have every right,” said Jesse Stull, neighbor.

Stull lives just a few doors down from where the deadly shooting took place.

“It seems like stuff like this happens all the time,” Stull said.
