SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- A family dog with no prior history of aggressiveness fatally attacked a 3-day-old baby while he was laying in bed.
The parents of the newborn told authorities they were watching television in bed with the child and their mixed breed American Staffordshire Terrier when the mother coughed, startling the animal and causing it to bite the infant, KSWB reports.
The couple rushed the baby boy to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Animal control then took custody of the 2-year-old dog, named Polo.
The dog is under quarantine to make sure he does not have rabies.
After the quarantine period is complete, the dog will be euthanized unless his owners decide to reclaim him, KSWB reports.
