NORFOLK, Va. – When a pet dies, many families feel like there is a hole left behind in their wake.

That is the case for Mary Westbrook and her 3-year-old son, Luke.

In an article in Distinction Magazine, Westbrook said that her beagle, Moe, died after being with the family for 13 years.

Ever since Moe died, Luke has wanted to stay in touch with his lost friend.

Occasionally, Westbrook and Luke would sit down and write a letter to Moe.

After Luke would put the letter in the mailbox, Westbrook said she would wait before taking it back out.

One night, she forgot to take the letter, addressed to “Moe Westbrook, Doggie Heaven, Cloud 1,” out of the mailbox.

After she realized her mistake, she went out to mailbox to find that the letter was gone.

Two weeks later, a letter appeared in their mailbox with “From Moe” as the return address.

The letter read, “I’m in doggie heaven. I play all day, I am happy. Thank you 4 being my friend. I wuv you Luke.”

“Receiving the note reminded me of the goodness of people and just how big a small gesture can really be. Here’s to Moe, in doggie heaven, and thoughtful postal workers everywhere,” Westbrook wrote in her article.
