SAPULPA, Okla. (KJRH) – An Oklahoma man is behind bars after he was accused of killing his girlfriend’s 3-year-old son.
Christopher Whinery is expected to face a first-degree murder charge for the little boy’s death.
On Tuesday, an ambulance rushed 3-year-old Jason White to the emergency room.
The boy’s grandfather says he received a call about an accident.
As hospital staff checked out Jason, doctors say his injuries were consistent with being shaken and then taking a hit to the head.
According to the arrest affidavit, Jason’s mother told officers she saw Whinery go into a bedroom and heard her son being spanked.
She claimed she heard him crying and finally a loud thump on the floor.
Jason White died at the hospital on Thursday.
His grandfather says he saw what could have been a sign of abuse one week before the boy’s death.
“He had a black eye. That is when we began wondering, and he was very quiet, very subdued,” he said.
Todd White says he plans to look after Jason’s brother and sister now.
He says he will have to figure out a way to tell them about the tragedy, adding that their father just recently passed as well.
“The only thing I can think to tell her is that God knew that he wouldn’t get well. So he took him to be with his daddy, so they’re waiting for you. They are waiting for me,” he said.
A fund to help with funeral expenses has been set up at South Heights Baptist Church.
