OKLAHOMA CITY – A metro family is grieving the loss of a 4-year-old boy following a tragic accident.
The young child suffered a fatal wound to the chest after falling onto a knife.
The heartbreaking scene took place in front of other children at the family home just south of Piedmont.
Bralyn Shively celebrated his fourth birthday last Tuesday.
No one could’ve imagined that just four days later, Bralyn would be dead.
Police say a weekend get together at the family’s home began with some innocent fun but quickly turned tragic.
“The victim’s uncle was lying in the hammock, whittling a piece of wood with a pocket knife,” said MSgt. Gary Knight, with the Oklahoma City Police Department. “The child was standing next to his uncle in a hammock and for whatever reason, the hammock broke and the man fell and child fell on top of him, impaling himself on the knife.”
Police and paramedics arrived to the home just a short time later and tried to revive the victim, but the little boy died at a local hospital.
So far, investigators don’t believe Bralyn’s uncle will be charged with any wrongdoing.
Knight said, “Although this case will be presented to the Canadian County District Attorney’s Office, it appears this is just a very tragic accident.”
Several family members and neighbors declined to talk about the death.
Neighbors said the family had recently moved to the home.
The uncle actually lives in a small town south of Des Moines, Iowa.
