CHICAGO – A 9-year-old boy was shot and killed Wednesday in an alley near his neighborhood.

The family of Antonio Smith says he had a tantrum and ran out of the house.

A few minutes later, they received a phone call, telling them he had been shot several times.

Authorities say he was shot at least four times in the back in a backyard that borders a railroad, which is the dividing line between two separate gang territories.

“A baby has been assassinated and where’s the anger? When that child was shot, some people out there were still drinking. I’m saying, ‘A baby has been assassinated,’ they’re like, well, they don’t car,” Arnold Caffey told the Chicago Tribune.

“There’s shamelessness to the silence over this boy’s death,” said Cynthia Smith-Thigpen. “It’s like, ‘Oh another child dead in Chicago.’ Perhaps we’re all numb to what goes on in this city.”

So far, no arrests have been made.

“I just want whoever did it to turn themselves in because he was 9-years-old, he was a baby and he didn’t deserve that,” said Rasheda Eggelston, the victim’s cousin.
