EDMOND, Okla. - An Edmond elementary school student is in trouble with the law for allegedly attacking a teacher.

The suspect in the case is just 9 years old.

He's accused of hitting the teacher several times in the face.

Police said the 9-year-old boy overreacted when the teacher placed a hand on his shoulder.

The child has now been cited for assault and battery.

It started during a school assembly last week.

"There was a teacher who tried to slide the student down the bench in the gym to make way for other students and the student kicked the teacher," Edmond police spokeswoman Jenny Monroe said.

According to the police report, the student then "sucker punched" the teacher in the face once and "before the teacher could get any help from other teachers, the student hit her two more times in the right side of the face."

"The teacher did want to press charges so we issued a citation," Monroe said. "They'll deal with it in juvenile court."

Officials with Edmond schools wouldn't go on camera but they did issue a statement saying the district "takes the incident very seriously and disciplinary consequences for this kind of behavior are swift and significant."

The name of the 9-year-old cited for the assault is not being released.
