OKLAHOMA CITY – A smash and grab theft is caught on tape.

Last week, a thief broke into a locally-owned shoe store in northwest Oklahoma City and made off with a cash drawer.

Surveillance video captured the whole crime, which only took 20 seconds once the alleged thief was inside the store.

That was just enough time to steal a couple hundred bucks.

Now, police are asking for the public’s help catching that alleged crook.

The doors are back open at Lynda’s Birkenstock Shoes after a thief used a rock to shatter the front glass to get inside.

Jamie McCartney, a store employee, said, “I was like, ‘Oh my God.’  He came in and stopped and ran out and came back.  I don’t think he recognized we have a cash drawer down below.  He ripped it out and the key dropped, so he had to work to get that open.”

In this case, smashing the glass hurt the business more than the cash the thief grabbed.

McCartney said, “He really didn’t get away with much.  It was more damage he caused. It cost us more to fix the damage than replace what he took.”

MSgt. Gary Knight, with the Oklahoma City Police Department, said, “He was in and out very quickly.  He spent very little time inside the business.”

Since the break-in happened at night, the black and white video makes it hard to identify the suspect.

However, police still hope someone recognizes the alleged crook.

“It’s just the time of year. I guess people are really crazy,” said McCartney.  “It’s tough because it’s a local business that he broke into.”

No one was inside the business at the time, so no one was injured during the crime.
