KOBANI, Syria – An American has died while fighting against ISIS in Syria.

A State Department official told NBC News that American citizen Keith Broomfield was killed while fighting alongside Kurdish forces in Syria.

Broomfield’s mother, Donna, said she learned about Keith’s death from her other son.

“I didn’t want him to go but I didn’t have a choice in the matter,” she said.

Women, who say they are his sisters, took to Facebook to post about the loss of their brother.

Donna Broomfield told NBC that her son went to Syria about four months ago and she rarely heard from him after that.

Many Americans are believed to be fighting with the Kurdish People’s Protection Union in the fight against ISIS. However, Broomfield is believed to be the first U.S. citizen to die fighting alongside the group.

The State Department did not release any other details about Broomfield’s death.
