AUSTRALIA — Cyber bullying and racist and sexist remarks are no stranger to the internet. But standing up to those remarks and seeing people have real life repercussions is a bit less common.
A feminist writer out of Australia gets more than her fair share of ugly comments posted to her Facebook page.
On Wednesday, Nov. 25, a man named Michael Nolan called Clementine Ford a “slut” after she had just called out another man for making degrading comments.
Nolan had his employer listed on his Facebook page, so Ford gave them a call.
“I wonder if the folks over at Meriton Apartments are aware that a man listing himself as a supervisor for their business likes to leave comments on women’s facebook pages calling them sluts. I wonder if they are also aware that he is a racist.”

By Sunday, Nov. 29, Ford posted an update that her stand against sexism had results. She was contacted by Meriton Apartments and was told the matter had been investigated; Michael Nolan had been terminated.

Adding to Meriton’s response, Ford said that maybe Nolan “will think twice next time before using his social media account to call a woman ‘slut’ when she speaks out against online misogyny.”
Some blamed Ford for Nolan’s unemployment, but she retorted by saying, “he is responsible for his actions” and the “things he writes and the attitudes he holds.”
Ford also thanked Meriton Apartments for taking the matter seriously.
